European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
